INERT GAS FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM

Inert gas fire suppression – How it works

Naturally present in the atmosphere, inert gases are a perfect solution to suppress fires. Inert gases act by reducing the level of oxygen in the room, making combustion impossible. In the event of a fire, the inert gas system automatically activates to quickly and effectively smother the fire before it spreads. When discharged, the oxygen level in the room is reduced sufficiently to suffocate the fire and enable safe evacuation of people in the room.

Rotarex Firetec INEREX System uses argon (IG01), nitrogen (IG100) or a mixture (IG55, IG541). Inert gases are non-conductive, making them particularly suitable for protecting sensitive areas such as data centers.

Gaseous fire protection system

Museums storage or data centers cannot rely on traditional fire protection methods like sprinklers, as water or foam could cause irreversible damage. Inert gas suppresses the fire without leaving any residue after discharge, enabling immediate resumption of activity without the need for costly clean-up.

Inert gases are chemically neutral, so they are not electrically conductive, guaranteeing the safety of sensitive electronic equipment in the room. The INEREX System extinguishes fires before they spread. In just a few seconds, the fire is put out, avoiding the risk of reignition.

Advantage of inert gas fire protection

The use of inert gas fire protection systems has many advantages:
  • Effective and premium quality: Firetec inert gas systems feature reliable technology and exceptional quality.
  • Environmentally friendly: Since inert gases are naturally present in the atmosphere, there is no negative effect on the environment when discharged. This system has zero ozone depletion potential & zero global warming potential.
  • Safe for humans: It is ideal to use this fire suppression system in human occupied areas. The system operates within NOAEL (No Observed Adverse Effect Level) limitations.
  • Highly flexible system: Thanks to the constant-flow technology, you can have a long discharge piping distance
  • Safe for equipment: the inert gas system leaves no residue after a discharge and is electrically non-conductive, with no risk of damage to sensitive equipment. Silent nozzles are available to limit noise during discharge, an advantage in sensitive environments.

A proven technology

INEREX inert gas systems are certified by UL, FM & VdS, which is proof of their reliability and quality. INEREX systems have undergone numerous stringent tests and meet very high-performance criteria.
In addition, all Rotarex manufacturing sites comply with ISO 9001 quality standards.

Compatibility with inert gas extinguishing agents

Additional information for gas:

Rotarex Firetec offers the INEREX inert gas system, which is compatible with all inert gas extinguishing agents at a cylinder pressure of 200 or 300 bar.

Inert gases are naturally present in the air and have no impact on the environment. Inert gases are really efficient when extinguishing fire as they allow to reduce the oxygen of the area below the oxygen level required for combustion (15 %).

Inert gas fire protection systems for data centers: the right choice?

Using a gas suppression system to extinguish fires is an ideal protection solution for data centers. Unlike water-based discharges, gas fire suppression systems effectively put out fires without causing damage to sensitive equipment, ensuring minimal disruption to the business. Once the fire is suppressed, there's no downtime for your data center, as the systems don't leave any residue. There's no need to clean up.

Inert gases such as Nitrogen, Argon or CO2 are naturally present in the atmosphere, making the INEREX® fire suppression system fire suppression system safe for both humans and the environment.

Rotarex Firetec has done the compatibility, performance testing and certification work for its INEREX® solution for you! The system is ready for configuration & installation. The patented constant flow pressure regulator technology helps to improve safety and to ensure significant savings

Inert Gas Fire Protection System

Inert gas fire protection - FAQ
What is an inert gas extinguishing system?

In the event of a fire, the inert gas system will automatically activate to suppress the fire quickly and effectively before it spreads. When discharged, the level of oxygen in the room will decrease sufficiently to smother the fire but allow for a safe evacuation for the people present in the room.

How does inert gas suppression work?

Inert gas systems discharge gas into the protected area, lowering the oxygen level from around 21% to around 12-15%, depending on the type of material burning. This reduction in oxygen is sufficient to stop combustion while allowing people in the space to breathe safely.

What types of inert gas are used in the INEREX system?

Rotarex Firetec offers 4 types of inert gas agents:

  • IG100 (Nitrogen)
  • IG01 (Argon)
  • IG55 (50% Nitrogen / 50% Argon)
  • IG541 (52% Nitrogen / 40% Argon / 8% CO2)
Can inert gas system be used in occupied zones?

Yes, inert gases suppress fires by lowering oxygen just enough to stop combustion, while still maintaining levels safe for short-term human exposure in occupied spaces.

What are the advantages of inert gas fire suppression systems?
  • Reliable and high-quality: Firetec inert gas systems feature reliable technology and exceptional quality.
  • Eco-friendly: Inert gases occur naturally, with zero ozone depletion or global warming potential.
  • Safe for occupants: Can be used in occupied areas under specific conditions.
  • Flexible installation: Constant-flow technology allows long discharge piping distances.
  • Equipment-friendly: Leaves no residue and is non-conductive, protecting sensitive equipment.
What are the INEREX certifications?

Inerex® by Rotarex Firetec is a complete UL, FM & VdS Approved Inert Gas Fire Suppression System.
