Rotarex Firetec Expands Product Line to Marine Applications with MED Certification
This
certification confirms that our marine fire suppression systems meet the rigorous safety and performance standards required for use in maritime environments, opening the door to new opportunities in the marine sector.
A response to critical maritime safety challenges
Merchant ships, offshore platforms, offshore wind turbines, cruise ships, military vessels and small specialized craft: all operate in areas at high risk of fire, like engine rooms, control rooms, cargo holds, pump rooms and hangars, where an uncontrolled fire can quickly cause considerable damage and endanger occupants and the environment. These are precisely the conditions Firetec's certified solutions are designed to address.
Showcased at SMM Hamburg
Rotarex Firetec marked this expansion with its presence at SMM Hamburg, the world's leading trade fair for the maritime industry, where the company presented its newly certified marine product line to an international audience of shipbuilders, naval architects, and maritime industry professionals.
“Obtaining MED certification is a major step for Rotarex Firetec. It validates years of engineering expertise and allows us to bring our proven fire suppression technology to an industry where safety margins are extremely tight. Presenting our solutions at SMM Hamburg confirmed the strong interest from the maritime sector, and we're excited to support our partners with reliable, certified systems” said Edouard Dumartinet, Sales Director at Rotarex Firetec.
Proven Technology, Now Marine-Certified
Two flagship products are now certified for use in maritime environments: the Inerex inert gas system and the RX5112, an FK-5-1-12-based fire suppression system. Both solutions offer the same level of performance and reliability that have made them trusted choices in onshore fire protection, now adapted to meet the specific requirements of maritime environments.
Certified to the Highest Industry Standards
Securing approval from major classification societies required extensive testing and verification, from the initial system design review to documentation approval and multiple performance tests. At every step, Rotarex Firetec ensured its systems operate efficiently while proving their reliability and compliance with stringent safety and sustainability standards.
For marine equipment, the applicable regulatory framework depends on the product, vessel and market. In the European Union, relevant equipment is assessed under the Marine Equipment Directive (MED – Directive 2014/90/EU) and, when compliant, bears the Wheelmark conformity marking. For UK vessels, the corresponding framework is the Marine Equipment Regulations (MER – S.I. 2025/1280). At international level, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) establishes global maritime safety requirements, notably through the SOLAS Convention. For fire protection systems, SOLAS Chapter II-2, including Regulation II-2/10 on fire fighting, is complemented by the International Code for Fire Safety Systems (FSS Code), which provides detailed technical specifications for the systems required by SOLAS.
Rotarex Firetec systems are designed and approved in accordance with the regulatory requirements and standards applicable to each product and intended vessel application.
